Help Us Advocate for Students in Foster Care

Are you a foster parent or guardian, or have you adopted a child?

According to the New York State Department of Education, 87% of children in foster care struggle with reading, a situation that demands urgent attention. I am working on an advocacy model to ensure that foster children receive the academic services they are entitled to and are on a college-ready trajectory.

My name is Helen Roussel, and I have advocated for students for over ten years. I am pursuing a Master of Social Work Degree and will apply to a university for support and expertise to complete this study. Your help is needed to improve the system for foster children!

The plan's first phase is to learn about the needs of foster care guardians and parents, including their experience navigating the education system and what help or training they received from the foster care agency. It is vital to understand real-life situations and hear your stories and challenges. Then, with this information and working with an agency, the plan is to develop a workable advocacy model. The final phase would be to partner with a university to implement it for two years and complete the study. Let's ensure our most vulnerable children receive the support they need and are entitled to!

I want to thank you in advance for your potential participation in this study. Please take a moment to fill out this form, and I will contact you for a short interview!

Your confidentiality is my priority. Your information will never be shared with a third party, and any information in this survey will be kept confidential.
