A Call for Courage

Being a member of a public school district board of education (BOE) is one of the most powerful ways to improve the quality of education and ensure students are equipped for college, training, and independence. Members can lead reform by enacting policies and advocating for professional development for leaders, teachers, and administrators to ensure that 100% of students read at grade level by the 3rd grade. But leadership takes courage.

PTAs and SEPTO organizations are a tremendous influence and force for good within a school district. It is vital that they understand the science of reading and how to lead and educate for change.

School District Board of Education Leadership Training with Angela Hanlin

This training equips school board members with the knowledge and vision to lead instructional transformation with confidence and clarity. Participants learn what it takes to move a district from a balanced literacy approach to a structured literacy model—grounded in science, supported by evidence, and focused on results.

Through this session, board members will:
  • Understand the shifts required to ensure high-quality instructional materials align with the science of reading.
  • Learn how to develop and support leaders as instructional leaders, capable of driving and sustaining meaningful change.
  • Recognize the critical role of explicit instruction and evidence-based practices in improving student outcomes across all classrooms.

Every decision at the board table impacts what happens in the classroom.

When leaders prioritize structured literacy and strong instructional practices, they change what’s possible for students. The research is clear--95% of students are capable of learning to read at grade level, regardless of background. This training ensures school boards are equipped to make that vision a reality.
