Literacy Laws are Blocked in New York State by Lobbyists and For-Profit Corporations.....

New York State Reading Association lobbied to have The Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Task Force Blocked. They have taken credit for blocking this essential legislation that would provide literacy laws, the science of reading to our children. See below:

Furthermore, our organization, along with Teach My Kid to Read and other organizations will be sending a joint letter to Governor Hochul. We want to know why she is listening to a corporation that makes millions from a disproven reading strategy that teaches children to guess words and not decode. Guessing is NOT reading!
Read our draft letter HERE.

Dyslexia Task Force Bill

New York State Reading Association (NYSRA) is an example of a corporation that does not use strategies aligned with the science of how children learn how to read. It is in their interest to block literacy laws as their programs would not be acceptable  if we had literacy laws.

Here's an Example from NYSRA of the Lucy Calkins Reading Program/Advice that Has Helped to Make More than  51% of NY's Children Illiterate. Look at their terrible programs that teach children failing strategies, and discriminates against children with weaker background knowledge (children in poverty).

ALWAYS teach children to sound out the letters in words, they need to learn how to decode. Then no matter what a child's background knowledge is; they can always read the word. Guessing is not reading!
