In-Person Tutoring

Picture
We encourage ongoing professional development, therefore we list teachers who have been trained at the Academy of Orton Gillingham (AOG). We list teachers who are looking for practicum students; these teachers are supervised by a Fellow (an expert) from the AOG - but have a background in special education.  These teachers are freshly trained, and need your student! We strongly advocate for summer tutoring.

Jeanie Albicocco - Commack Area of Long Island

I've been a  certified Reading Specialist for the past 17 years at Albany Avenue School  in Lindenhurst .  I am pursuing an Associate Level Certification in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and am working under fellow, Ann Edwards. I have already completed the 30 hour Classroom Educator Level training.  I am looking for a student to work with to complete my practicum assignment.  The student can be diagnosed as "dyslexic" OR have an IEP with decoding goals.  He/she must be in either first or second grade.  The student should not have other diagnoses such as ADHD.  Tutoring would take place 2x/week for a period of 8 months.  I live in Commack and would like to meet in person.  I am charging a fee of $60.00 per session reflective of my current credentials as a certified reading specialist.  A parent group directed me to your organization.  If you know of any parents interested in having their child tutored with this approach, I'd appreciate if you would contact me.  I can be reached at 516.695.8388.  Thank  you for your time....Jeannie Albicocco

Professional Development

Learn about dyslexia - be the teacher who makes a difference to a child with dyslexia. Did you kow thay dyslexia can be identified as early as pre-school?

Children can be screened with a 92.5% accuracy rate as early as 5 ½ – 6 ½ years old. Most of the challenges students with dyslexia encounter can be prevented if they are screened and identified early. If they are provided with appropriate explicit structured literacy starting in Kindergarten. When dyslexia is left untreated their academic struggles are amplified in middle and high school, causing them to fall behind academically and impacting their self esteem and confidence.

We hold training events all over New York for multiple school districts. Contact us for schedules and to organize a training event or education on dyslexia at your school district.

We recommend training via the Academy of Orton Gillingham: Literacy for Life

The Orton-Gillingham Approach

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is the foundation for the majority of recognized reading remediation programs. It is a scientifically-based multisensory instruction approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling to students with dyslexia, those with learning disabilities and struggling readers. The approach was named for a neurologist and pathologist, Samuel Torrey Orton and a psychologist and educator Anna Gillingham. They brought together neuroscience with the best education and remedial practices. The multisensory approaches engages all learners by presenting concepts in ways that visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learners can grasp.

The Writing Revolution

This is an explicit expository writing strategies program. The strategies are useful in all subjects and help students learn how to clearly express, and process information. It is good for students from prek-to college. It is especially helpful for those with dyslexia, but a great resource for general education students too.

The Writing Revolution transforms instruction across the curriculum through a proven, coherent method that enables all students, and especially those from low-income families, to develop the literacy and critical thinking skills they need to engage productively in society.

The Lindamood Bell LiPSⓇ Program

During our work advocating for students, we have found students that are missing the pre-reading skill of phonemic awareness. Research indicates that phonemic awareness is the essential foundational skill that needs to be mastered to make it possible to make progress in reading.
