Symptoms of Dyslexia

Step One...

Child is experiencing problems...they may have some or all of these symptoms..

  • Reading is slow and awkward
  • Does not seem to be able to easily associate the sound with a letter
  • Complains about how difficult reading is
  • Cannot sound out words
  • Does not understand that words come apart
  • Avoids reading out loud
  • Family history of reading problems

Early identification is important

It is really important to first get hearing and eyesight checked.
Some educators/psychologists may equate difficulties in reading to lack of focus. Beware that there is a disturbing trend in the USA to medicate children to improve their ability to focus. The Center for Disease Control states that there have been no long term studies of the emotional effects of medication on children. Medication will not help a child learn how to read; a structured Orton-Gillingham approach reading program and a trained teacher will.

Impacts of dyslexia

  • Low self-confidence
  • When you can’t seem to do the things other people find easy
  • Start to believe it when people tell you you’re lazy or stupid
  • But when you stop trying there is no hope of success.
The first step is an evaluation.
